Studying English in a childhood as any foreign language is a natural process for the same reason that childhood memories are the strongest and the sweetest ones

Foreign language in a childhood is rather absorbed than studied. And there are few reasons for this

It has been established that a memory of a child better remembers simple yet concrete facts whereas a memory of an adult tend to generalize and conclude

Besides, studying English language is a graduate process which takes some time

Most popular argument in favor of early English learning is that the memory of a child is much better than the memory of adults. It is hard to disagree. Not only children better absorb and remember a new information but also they have more clear, even though very short, attention focus.

Studying language for a child is one of the fundamental processes. From the very first moths of life a child explores the world in all its details and diversity. A child reacts to the sounds since the time of his/her antenatal life, gradually learning to distinguish emotional meaning of words and later face expression and gestures. Gradually a child gets familiar with colours, scents and substances of the surrounding world. All energy of a child is focused on exploring things, tangible and intangible. Every tiny detail can capture his/her attention and engross a child completely. A child is able to invest himself so much into studying something like no adult can. That is why all the knowledge and skills acquired in the childhood have long lasting effect.

Have you ever realized how strong the memory of the scents from our childhood is? Whenever we appear in certain circumstances and in a certain place the scents from our childhood come back to live and our memory reborn picturing in vivid colours and tiny details all the people, the place and the circumstances surrounded us long time ago. We all have it no doubt. Some remember a scent of meadow at the summer day, some remember a scent of mother’s fur coat at New Year night, sometimes it is a scent of toys department in a Kinder store and sometimes it is a scent of a favorite doll. But we all are familiar with this “twists” of imagination. Remarkably, adult life events come and go while memories of a childhood remain and if we wanted sometimes we could restore them down to the smallest details.

Studying foreign language is somewhat resembles this situation. In their early years a child doesn’t differentiate much between his/her native language and any foreign language. Both of them are new to them. The only difference is that with one of them a child already associates some experience while with the other experience can be less or no one. Another significant advantage of learning foreign language in early childhood is that a child possesses a stronger desire for probing, exploring, absorbing and remembering.

It was discovered by American scientists that a child’s memory has one very interesting feature different from the adults. A child remembers things and events ranking them according to their factual value while an adult remembers the result, the consequence of the fact. What way do you think is better in terms of foreign language studying? Correct, the first one.

There are many adults who acknowledge one common problem or let’s call it an obstacle in English learning. Most adults see the major problem in studying English in the absence of logic in the things they are required to “memorize”. Hence the false believe that successful English learning depends solely on “memorizing”. However, the English language is a very structured language and there are just a few elements which cannot be logically explained and should be only “memorized”. However, adults have troubles remembering them because they have lost the ability of unconditional perception of new facts and seek logic according to the logic rules they are used to. But because they are learning new material the logic rules that apply to this material is also new. Children, on the contrary are free of these barriers and open to absorb a language.

The process of English learning by a child undergoes in a form of game with lots of pictures, flashcards, characters from fairy tales, songs and physical activity which altogether helps a child studying foreign language through fun and interesting activity mixed with communication with playmates.

And, finally, studying English is a graduate process. In order to achieve prominent results and high level the knowledge should be built up. It is like a graduate construction of a 100 storey skyscraper. A native speaker, teacher has told me once that it takes only few minutes or second for a native speaker to evaluate the level of spoken English. “And the main defining characteristic – he confessed – which defines the level on a scale from very high to low is the ability to use collocations and commonly used structures”. “Because sometimes – he continued – a person says everything grammatically correct but we don’t speak this way. And the person sounds rough and incoherent. The more organic the speech is the better”. And this comes with time and practice. And even a trip to the “environment” will not save you.

It is so typical to meet people who have lived in English speaking country on a “camp” or otherwise for about half a year up to few years, who speak quiet fluently but very shallow. Surprisingly their vocabulary often is very limited and they don’t have even half of the vocabulary of the intermediate level. Why so? The answer is the same. Learning English is a graduate process. A person who jumps over some step(s) breaks the successive chain of knowledge which builds up in any language. Having appeared in a native speaking environment people learn and absorb the vocabulary which is commonly used at the given moment in the given environment. But they don’t receive the vocabulary which has been learned by native speakers in their childhood and throughout their lives. That’s why kids who go to live in the native speaking environment on “camp” often gets stuck in the teenager slang. You can live in a hope that a shallow level will do in a pinch but I bet you wouldn’t want to rely on this. In Europe where children study English with native speakers from early childhood and the English language is widely spoken superficial level will be glaring. And since the English is the most widely spoken language in the world it has high standards to look up to.

Good news is that a good, European level of English is attainable. You can do it by gradually building up the knowledge. And it is better to start in the childhood!
